When You Hurt, Call White Willow Family & Cosmetic Dentistry

Protect your oral health from cavities and gum disease with twice daily brushing and once a day flossing along with six-month exams and cleanings from your dentist in Scarborough. Preventive dentistry removes harmful  plaque and tartar and spots small problems, such as a new cavity, before they progress to something complicated, painful and costly.

However, sometimes things happen to our oral health we cannot control. A motor vehicle mishap, a sports injury, a fall on a slippery sidewalk–accidents damage restorations or even knock out teeth or lacerate the soft tissues of the mouth. What do you do when something like that happens?

Please call White Willow Family & Cosmetic Dentistry as soon as possible for non life- threatening emergencies involving the teeth, gums, tongue, hard palate or jaw. Dr. Amaro and  Dr. Patel and their caring staff can schedule an immediate appointment if warranted. Or, they will advise you on the best course of action.

What Can You Do in These Situations?

Your tooth was knocked out (avulsed) in a fall. Rinse dirt and debris off the tooth, leaving any clinging soft tissue.  Grasp the tooth, and put it back in the socket roots first. Hold it there while you travel to the dental office.

The American Association of Endodontists states that the sooner an avulsed tooth is treated, the better the chances are that it will survive. If you cannot replace the tooth,  keep it moist by transporting it in a sealed container with milk, water, saliva or over the counter tooth preservative.

You have a  throbbing toothache. You may have a dental abscess, or infection, related to dental decay. Dr. Amaro or Patel will see you as soon as possible for digital X-rays and a visual inspection to determine treatment. In the interim, apply ice to your aching jaw (20 minutes on and 20 minutes off). Don’t ignore your toothache or try to treat the pain yourself.

I chipped my tooth when chewing some peanut brittle. When you fracture a tooth, try to save the pieces, and ice the area to reduce swelling. Cover the jagged edges with store-bought orthodontic wax.  Call White Willow Family & Cosmetic Dentistry for advice and an urgent care appointment. Depending on their severity, chips and fractures may be repaired with composite resin bonding or CEREC same-day crowns if necessary.

I lost a crown. Attempt to put it back in place. If you cannot. put it in a small plastic bag, and bring it to your emergency dentist. Cover jagged edges with orthodontic wax.

I was in a motor vehicle  accident and cannot close my mouth. Your jaw may be fractured or dislocated. This is a medical emergency. Go to a hospital emergency room right away.
