Dental Sealants

White Willow Family & Cosmetic Dentistry is proud to offer dental sealants as part of our preventative services. Dental sealants use a resin material that’s applied to the chewing surface of molars to prevent cavities. By acting as a barrier for areas prone to tooth decay, the tooth is essentially sealed to stop food particles from becoming trapped in the hard to reach crevasses of the molars. Using a simple and non-invasive procedure, the resin bonds to the pits and fissures of the back teeth to protect enamel to prevent cavities.

As a family dentist, we strive to provide comprehensive preventative services for every member of your family. We use the sealants on children, teenagers, and even adults to help prevent damage before it starts.

Do Children Need Dental Sealants?

Most often, sealants are used on children to seal out food and bacteria for cavity protection, however, adults can benefit from sealants as well. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends both children and adolescents get their molars sealed as sealants are proven to reduce cavities by as much as 86 percent within one year and up to 58 percent after 4 years.

The American Dental Association recommends the primary biting teeth, which are the 6 to 12-year-old molars, are sealed around the age of 6. However, for the best protection, the sealants should be applied as soon as a permanent tooth erupts.

Benefits of Dental Sealants

The protective barriers are easily applied to combat cavities when combined with the proper home care of brushing and flossing. When used along with great oral hygiene, including fluoride treatments and a healthy diet, the sealants are the final piece of protection children need to prevent cavities.

The strong and durable material will block cavity-causing food particles and bacteria from becoming trapped without impacting the child’s ability to chew. The safe, non-invasive, and pain-free procedure is an excellent added bonus to keep your child’s mouth happy and healthy.

For as long as 10 years, the sealants will work to protect the teeth from cavities, but we will check the sealants at each visit to ensure they haven’t been chipped or worn away. If damage has occurred, we can quickly repair the sealant to restore the protection.

Dental Sealants Aren’t Just for Kids

No matter your age, we are able to provide dental sealants for teeth that are prone to cavities. The teeth to be sealed will first be cleaned and examined. Then, the tooth will be dried and the sealant will be placed on the tooth. A special light is used to quickly harden the sealant. From start to finish, the simple procedure takes just minutes to compete.
