In the last century, the goal of dental care has shifted from seeking responsive treatment when dental damage occurs to being focused around preventive dentistry. Preventive dental care has increased the likelihood that patients will keep their healthy, natural teeth for life, and White Willow Family & Cosmetic Dentistry is dedicated to helping patients achieve this goal. In combination with regular at-home hygiene, twice a year dental checkups and professional teeth cleanings help patients achieve their healthiest smiles.

Teeth Cleanings

Our team recommends that patients attend a professional teeth cleaning appointment as part of every six month checkup. In keeping with recommendations from the Canadian Dental Association (CDA), these twice a year visits make it possible for people to prevent the vast majority of oral health issues, and diagnose and treat others in their earliest stages. During a dental cleaning, our hygienists remove built up plaque or tartar that has accumulated since the last appointment, examine gums to ensure they are healthy, recommend changes to at home hygiene to improve overall oral health, and provide dental sealants or fluoride treatments to protect and fortify smiles when necessary. Typically one of the last things we do before patients leave their checkup, a dental cleaning includes plaque and tartar removal, flossing, and paste application.

Oral Hygiene Between Dental Checkups

As dental practitioners, one of our most important tasks is to offer patients education concerning best practices in oral hygiene. We only have the chance to clean your teeth twice a year, so it’s essential that you know how to do so effectively every day. A few simple rules to follow in your at-home hygiene routine to ensure best results include:

  • Brushing basics – effective brushing means using a soft bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste two times each day, for at least two minutes at a time. These basics are taught from a young age, but one thing many patients don’t realize is that brushing systematically to ensure every surface of each tooth is cleaned rather than brushing at random makes a huge difference when it comes to effective brushing.
  • Fundamentals of flossing – the most important thing to remember about flossing is to be consistent. Even if flossing doesn’t feel as good as brushing when it comes to fresher breath or cleaner feeling teeth, flossing is essential in order to clean all sides of each tooth and prevent gum disease. Make sure to shape the floss in a “C” around both sides of each tooth, and move gently back and forth all the way below the gum line.
  • The 30 minute rule – many patients know that allowing fluoride in the toothpaste to sit on teeth thirty minutes after brushing before eating and drinking is essential, but waiting half an hour after eating to brush also protects teeth from potential damage.
  • Dietary changes – avoid consuming acidic foods and drinks throughout the day. If you want to include sugary, acidic foods and drinks in your diet, consume them within half an hour, and drink plenty of water to rinse out your mouth.
