WELCOME TO WHITE WILLOW FAMILY & COSMETIC DENTISTRY
IMPROVING SCARBOROUGH SMILES WITH ORTHODONTICS
Orthodontics is one of the first dental specialties to gain popularity. Though for many years cruel nick names like “metal mouth,” or “brace face,” made young people and adults alike dread visiting the orthodontist, innovative braces techniques and styles make it easier than ever to straighten out smiles. At White Willow Family & Cosmetic Dentistry, we offer patients of all ages effective smile correcting options. In addition to offering braces and early intervention orthodontics, our Scarborough dental practice offers the more cosmetic Invisalign orthodontic system. For cases that require referral work, we also partner with local orthodontists.
Traditional braces use a series of brackets and wires to gradually shift permanent teeth into proper alignment. Your Scarborough orthodontist offers both metal and ceramic wires and brackets. Ceramic braces are more cosmetically appealing and hypoallergenic for patients with metal allergies, but both types of braces work in the same manner. Brackets are affixed to the front of teeth using dental cement. An arch wire connects the brackets, and is tightened to apply pressure to specific teeth. The pressure moves the visible portions of teeth. Below the gums, the alveolar bone (bone tissue that anchors teeth to the jaw) is constricted by the surface level pressure, over time, new bone tissue develops on the opposite side of the tooth. This process occurs for each tooth. Patients with traditional braces can expect to complete treatment within 18 to 24 months.
In many cases, early intervention prevents children from needing braces, or significantly reduces the amount of time orthodontic treatment takes. The American Association of Orthodontics recommends that all kids receive an orthodontic screening by the age of 7. These preventive orthodontic treatments help kids with smiles that are developing with a cross bite, underbite, or overbite. Using braces, retainers, or other dental appliances, developing teeth are redirected into proper alignment as they grow. By intervening before teeth are fully developed, correction is often more comfortable, takes less time, and is easier to maintain than traditional orthodontic treatment.
Caring for Braces
Maintaining best practices in oral hygiene is even more important for patients with braces. The brackets and wires give bacteria and plaque more places to hide increasing the risk for tooth decay. Our dentist and hygienists are happy to demonstrate the best and easiest ways to care for your smile during orthodontic treatment. One important change for braces wearers is brushing after meals. The complex system of wires and brackets makes it more likely for food particles to get stuck leading to decay, and brushing between meals helps prevent damage.
Interested in a more cosmetically appealing orthodontic treatment option? White Willow Family & Cosmetic Dentistry offers treatment with the Invisalign clear braces system. This option is great for image-conscious adults and teens, those with sensitivity to metal, or who don’t have the time in their schedules for frequent orthodontist appointments.
